Traditional and Resin Cements' Water Sorption and Solubility in Two Types of Media: In Vitro Study
Journal ID : AMJ-05-12-2022-10880; Author : sadi shirshab, sadi shirshab, sadi shirshab,
Abstract : The aim of this study is to investigate the sorption and solubility of two groups of cement: traditional and dual cure resin cements. These two variables were examined in this study for eight types of dental cements (five traditional and three dual cure resin cement), which were evaluated for two periods of immersion: one day and seven days in two distinct solutions; distilled water and lactic acid. Ten specimens were prepared of each material following the manufacturer's instructions. Sorption and solubility were calculated by weighing the specimens before and after immersion and desiccation. A total of 200 samples of dental cements were prepared, with 20 specimens for each cement: ten for distilled water and ten for lactic acid. The samples were weighed for sorption before and after being placed in medium, after 1 day and seven days. The samples removed from media were dried in a desiccator, and weighed again. Each period's percentage of solubility was determined as a percentage of weight decrease, divided by the specimen's original weight. Results for sorption and solubility showed highly significant differences (at P<0.000) in both sorption and solubility along all of the studied periods, with both lactic acid or distilled water, in different types of cements.

Impacted mandibular third molar: The value of considering clinical and demographic factors in improving the prediction of extraction difficulty
Journal ID : AMJ-04-12-2022-10879; Author : Abdurrahman A. Al-Samman,
Abstract : The Preoperative assessment of extraction difficulty of mandibular third molar is very important for both patients and clinicians. In the last years, many new difficulty-estimating indices had been proposed, evaluating radiographical parameters alone (Kim et al. index, and Lainez et al. index) or considering additional clinical and demographic factors (Zhang et al. index and Pernambuco index). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of considering non-radiographical factors in the prediction of extraction difficulty. Four scales predicted extraction difficulty of a series of 50-impacted mandibular third molar preoperatively. The postoperative difficulty was assessed by Parant scale and the time required for surgery. The proposed indices had low to moderate sensitivity (21%-37%, 41%-67%) and variable in their specificity (21%-86%, 36%-85%). Only three out of four evaluated indices have shown a statistically significant correlation with both, the operation time and the surgical technique; namely, Lainez et al., Zhang et al., and Pernambuco indices. Considering clinical and demographic factors in preoperative difficulty assessment scales in wisdom tooth surgery may improve prediction accuracy of these scales.

Journal ID : AMJ-04-12-2022-10876; Author : Pompini Agustina Sitompul, Nina Mariana, Surya Oto Wijaya, Rumaisha Satyawati, Adria Rusli, Titi Sundari, Rosamarlina Rosamarlina, Faisal Rizal Matondang, Haruyuki Dewi Faisal, Vivi Setiawaty, Mohammad Syahril,
Abstract : A 71-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital on 7 July 2020 diagnosed with critically ill COVID-19 disease on a ventilator. The symptoms started three days before; fever, fatigue, and shortness of breath. She had a history of hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Blood test showed signs of severe inflammatory immune response and critical of clinical course. An intervention of Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) therapy was planned as an add-on therapy. Evaluation was conducted by clinical presentation, blood drawing and radiography examination. We highlight that the patient showed promising clinical, laboratory, and radiological improvement after therapy. However, we cannot conclude whether the improvement is caused by UC-MSCs therapy itself since it is only a single case report and an old case report that the Covid-19 vaccinations are not already available at that time. Therefore, further studies were needed to investigate this result.
